Toggle switches are one of the innumerable components of an electrical system with a definite purpose. In terms of electrical use, it is defined as a device that allows or bars the flow of current.
The switch generally has 2 positions — the on position and the off position. In case of a simple switch, when it is in the on position, the electrical circuit is completed to enable the flow of current while in the off position the circuit is incomplete and there is no current. Toggle switches slightly differ from normal switches in their working mechanism. It resembles a gate that has 2 parts to itself. When the gate is closed and the two parts are in contact, current flows through the system. This is the on position. When the gate is open and the two parts are detached from each other, the circuit is broken and no current flows through it. This happens in the off position.
The word toggle refers to the action of switching from one state to another. The concept behind the switch is fairly simple but it has extremely far reaching implications in electrical theory. Although the working principle of switches apparently seems to be simple, complex machines such as super computers are generally run by it.
The most common types of toggle switches are the ones used to turn on and off electrical currents. Circuit breakers in fire alarms and simple light switches are the best examples. Toggle switches are rated by the amount of current that flows through it in the on position. They are extremely crucial to successful operation of electrical system since they put the whole process into motion. Hence experts demarcate toggle switches as the last area where cost cutting should be attempted while manufacturing electrical systems.
