Do not kid yourself – you need good plans to complete a good woodworking project. Remember that every woodworking project needs to be thoroughly planned. The internet is now the most convenient, and sometimes the best, place to find woodworking plans of all types imaginable. Although drawing up your own plans is admirable, if you have the time and more importantly the skill, the availability of "ready-make" plans for immediate download is a tremendous benefit to both beginning and serious woodworker alike.
When you're starting out in woodworking, remember to match your plans to your skills. Start with an easy project that you will be able to complete easily and then gradually move up to more difficult projects. Use the advice and guidance obtained from your plans without deviation, and use the recommended tools for the job. The right tools will make the project much simpler and your work more efficient. There's nothing more frustrating than trying to use a tool to complete a task it was not intended for. Do not be a "hack", you will regret it and your woodworking project will show it.
Occasionally, as your skills and techniques improve, you may want to start creating your own woodworking plans since that will make woodworking even more fun. On the other hand, do not re-create the wheel if you do not need to. There are tons of great free or inexpensive plans available. Your plans or others; both will work for you and make for a great hobby or maybe even a profession.
