We all know that starting off with a great set of chest plans is important when you're making a bedroom chest of drawers. But there are a number of other things to consider before starting off your woodworking project.
1. Do you have all the right skills? Different projects have different skill requirements. Simple tables may be within everyones grass but a complex dresser with hand crafted dovetail joints and decorative hardwood inlays may be beyond your skills. Make sure you are not biting off more than you can chew!
2. What kind of wood will you use? Price is certainly a factor but you must keep in mind the characteristics of different types of wood. Pine is of course the eternal favorite for many bedroom furniture sets but oak or cherry are worth considering as well.
3. Do you have all of the tools you'll need? If you're just making a sawhorse you do not need special tools. But if you're making a complicated project you'll need to have the right tools. You do not want to go to the hardware store mid-project so make sure you have what you need up front.
4. Do you have the right plans? It's simple to go get a free woodworking project plan on the Internet. But the problem is that those free plans are mostly garbage. The finished results are worth little more than firewood. Get a good set of chest plans from a reputable location and you will not be sorry.
Ignore these four items at your own peril!
