DIY Grouting Tips

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

You have set all your tiles making sure the grout lines are even and straight, and if they were floor tiles your knees are sore and you are glad to have all tile laid. It is now time to let the tile job set overnight or 24 hours if you can, before finishing the job by grouting.

Grouting is the finishing process of your tile job and is very rewarding. With these simple tips your grouting will go easier and avoid some common problems.

· Let the grout slake, this process will allow the water to penetrate all the dry ingredients.

Let grout set, and then remix the grout after letting it set for 10 or 15 minutes. Add a little water if the grout is too thick, or more grout if it is too thin. Be careful it doesn’t take much material to change the viscosity. Don’t mix more grout than you can spread in an hour, it is better to mix small amounts of grout than to have it harden before you can use all of it.

· Don’t spread too much grout at once

Scoop the grout from the mixing bucket with your grout float and apply it to the tile diagonal with the grout lines. This will force the grout into the joints.

Temperature and humidity will affect how quickly the grout starts to harden after you spread it. Once it does start to harden, you’ll really have to hustle to get it cleaned off the tile before it is too late. Only grout a small area at a time a 3 x 3 foot area will be best to start with. Finish grouting, and cleaning each section before proceeding.

For a successful grout job, make sure all the joints are completely filled with grout. To do this best is to make several passes over the same area from different directions with the grout float. Hold the float with its face at an angle of about 45 degrees to the joint lines to force the grout into the joint. When the joints are filled, remove the excess grout from the face of the tiles by holding the float at almost 90 degrees to the tile and scraping it off.

· Use a clean, damp sponge to remove grout

Remove excess grout with a sponge by removing grout from the face of the tile with one of the edges of a damp sponge, using a clean edge of the sponge for each stroke.

Start with a clean bucket of water. Wet your sponge and wring it out until it’s damp. Use the sponge so that the edge of the sponge is in contact with the wall and drag the sponge in a continuous stroke across the tile. Rotate the sponge to expose a clean edge and repeat the process alongside the first stroke. When you’ve used all four sides of the sponge, rinse it in clean water, wring it out, and continue the process until you’ve cleaned the entire area once. Clean the tiles two or three more times using the same process until the tile are free of grout residue. A thin film of grout may appear when the water evaporates. Buff this off with a soft cloth.

· Don’t over scrub the grout or use too much water

Don’t use a wet sponge to clean grout from the tile. Let the grout harden slightly before you start to clean off the excess. Test the grout by pressing on it with your finger. When it starts to harden, you can start cleaning the excess grout from the face of the tile. Two common mistakes are using too much water, and scrubbing the tile like you’re washing a wall. Too much water will weaken the tile and cause the grout color to be uneven when it dries. Excessive scrubbing doesn’t remove grout efficiently; it just moves it around.

· Remove grout from corners before caulking

Remove grout from along the tub or counter top to make room for caulk. You will want to use caulk in these areas as grout is not flexible, caulk is used at corners instead of grout. For a good tile installation, apply a neat bead of matching caulk at vulnerable areas.

· Seal porous tile before grouting

Apply a thin coat of sealer to porous stone. Follow the application instructions on the label. Wipe up excess sealer with a cloth to avoid puddles. Then let the sealer dry before you grout.

If you don’t seal porous tiles and stone, grout will stick like glue and be nearly impossible to clean off. Check with your tile supplier for recommendations on what product to use.

Major Types Of House Cleaning Services

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

The house cleaning companies provide a variety of flexible frequency in their services. You can decide which service you intend to use. If you wish to hire house cleaners for your home, you can hire them on a daily or weekly basis. While hiring house cleaners on a daily basis will help to keep your home even cleaner, weekly cleaning is the cheapest available option.

In addition to the companies, we can even get our house cleaned by private cleaners. It is really an interesting fact that we get all the facilities provided by the companies from the private cleaners too. On the contrary, hiring private cleaners can effectively reduce the cost. However, reliability and quality of service remains an area of concern.

Types: – Typically, there are three major types of hired help. You can get your house cleaned by any of these house cleaners as par your wish and requirement. Services provided by each of them are almost the same. Thus quality and costing are the main selection parameters for hiring.

  1. Freelancer: – A freelancer is the name given to those individuals, who are usually not licensed or insured and do several private jobs. Several unemployed as well as employed individuals do freelancing jobs on a part time basis. The advantage of using freelancing professionals for cleaning purposes is that you can get the job done on a time suitable for you. At the same time, it is much easier to bargain with a person not tied with any commercial organization.
  2. Mother’s Helper: – Commonly referred as House helper, this group of people, preferably woman, provides various household services. You can get your job done and pay a usually feasible hourly rate.
  3. Maid Service Company: – It is the most preferred cleaning service provider. Hiring a maid service company ensures there is no compromise on quality of work. These companies are licensed and insured and therefore can easily be relied upon. At the same time, they offer services on weekly or daily basis as you intend. However, charges may be a bit higher compared to mother’s helper and freelancers but the rates are not beyond your reach

Boat Building

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

Building something from practically scratch can have a very satisfying effect on you. All that time you spent and all that effort you put into that certain project of yours finally pays off when you see it come full circle. And the same could be said about building your very own boat.

There is definitely abundance when it comes to plans as well as kits for building your very own boat and you can certainly get every cent’s worth when you decide to make a purchase. However, it isn’t always true.

Boat building plans come in various shapes as well as sizes. There are those that are easy to understand and do. On the other hand, there are those that are very complicated and hard to understand.A good way to start off your boat building, though, is to know your comfort level regarding something like this. If you happen to find that your woodworking skills still shine, then you can do something that will be cheaper in the long run.

The best thing for you to do is to probably have a detailed and thorough plan when it comes to your budget if you want to pull this one off. Of course, you do want your boat to last as long as possible right? For this to happen, you should find yourself the best boat plan you can get your hands on. After all, being safe while on the water is more important compared to saving just a few dollars now.

It is unlikely for your boat to fall apart when get in although you wouldn’t want to take that chance if you’re going out to sea in it.

It will be many times more cost efficient to make a purchase for a boat from a sporting goods store compared to building it yourself although it won’t be that much satisfying. Anybody can buy a boat from such a store, but the satisfaction of building it yourself will be absent.

Aside from those, you should also anticipate that there will be some sort of overspending that might happen when you build a boat yourself. The cost of doing so will depend on where you reside. The cost of the wood you’re going to use when shipped might make you spend more in case you live somewhere that’s far away from sea. Just to be sure, it would be good to add around a quarter more of your budget to your budget for those unexpected things that might pop up.

Remember, as with anything else, boat building takes time and patience to do, but you will be doubly satisfied after you get done.

Basic Building Plans – Things to Look For in Choosing the Right Plan

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

If you are a novice builder, using basic building plans is probably the best way to go in your first few projects. It'll give you an experience in woodworking and it will give you a taste of the building process that's bound give you more confidence to tackle more complicated projects should you wish to pursue the craft.

I still remember the first couple of times I ever built something. If I remember those projects correctly, it was not even noteworthy. I was ushered into the world of woodworking gradually. With every basic repair I did around the house, with every time I needed to use my saw and hammer to build a simple woodworking piece, I became better at the craft. And then, before I knew it, I was already building furniture piece by piece.

But then, that's just me. Your circumstance may vary with mine but if you are looking for some basic building plans, here are some things you need to look for in choosing the best plan:

Materials List

You need to start by making sure that the plan gives a list of all the things you will need in order to build the project. Even during the planning stage, you will need this complete list.

In most cases, you will need this list because, if you're like most people, you need to work with a certain budget in mind. So then, a list of materials is imperative for you to determine if your budget allows you to procure the materials needed.

Furthermore, I always consider it a good practice to prepare all the materials you're going to need before you even begin building. This way, you would not run into the problem of having the materials unavailable to you for whatever reasons, during the course of construction.

Clear and Step by Step Instruction

Even until now, I still consider plans with thorough yet, simple and easy to understand instructions the best of plan all. The instruction has to be laid out with all the bases covered so as to avoid confusion on the part of the builder.

I've often seen plans with very vague instruction. And I tell you, a plan like that is a surefire recipe for disaster in the hands of novice builder. You would not want to use that kind of plans and be sucked into never-ending headache and confusion.

Illustration

Illustrations and images are indicator of good quality plans. Most easy to implement plans I've ever used has diagrams and images. Images help you understand instructions visually.

Beside, if given the choice of being shown how to do a particular thing as opposed to being given instruction on how to do the same thing, I'm sure most of us agree that we understand more the process if we're given some form of demonstration. For the most part, this is the vital role that images play in basic building plans.

Three Secrets to Great Wood Work

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

When you have been doing something awhile, you get into habits which you have built up over time. Some of these habits can be great ones, while others may be bad habits, born from tedious repetition, or working tired. It is beneficial then to take a step back now and then, and re-examine what you know, and maybe perfect your good habits, or shine up some that may have gotten a but rusty over time when doing wood work.

The same thing is true with your woodworking skills. Some skills you perfect over time, and others you pick up along the way, that maybe are not as great. Its time to take a minute, and look back at five woodworking secrets to know and perfect.

Tools

Sure, when you started your woodworking hobby, you did not have a lot of extra money to spend, and your spouse or girlfriend did not understand why you wanted to make furniture and cabinets, when you could just go buy some. You might have picked up some cheap tools from a yard sale, or maybe used the crappy ones dad hug you secondhand when you moved out.

Guess what? It's time to get some quality tools. Quality does not mean expensive, talk to some people that have been doing this for a while, and find out what they think. A hammer with a solid, flat head will help you not bang your hammer all over the wood, and quality screwdrivers will keep you from stripping out your screw heads. This really is a nice, easy way to improve the quality of your woodwork.

Plug Cutters

This is along the same lines of improving already good work. When filling counter sunk holes, many times we just slap some wood putty in there, and say, "well, that's good enough!" However, this solution is not the best choice. Take the extra time and effort to cut plugs for your holes. Invest in a good set of plug cutters, and make a habit of using them.

This simple step will lend a look of professional quality, and makes the surface smooth and match. This is especially important if you are finishing the wood, instead of painting it. Another little tip is to cut the plug so that the grain matches. Remember, it is the little details that make good work great!

Assembly Blocks

This is a simple trick that can make your projects twice as easy. Sometimes, it feels like we need a third or fourth hand when assembling some trickier pieces. Using blocks can make assembly much easier, by keeping the joints and ends in the correct position while you work on another part of the piece.

These blocks are very simple to make. Get some medium density fiberboard from a craft shop. Cut intersecting dadoes into the middle of a couple of pieces, so that the edges of your boards fit snugly into it. Obviously, you may want to cut different lengths and depths to match different size boards you will be working with over time.

These are three simple tips that can reduce stress and increase your sense of pride in your craft. Most of all, remember to be safe, and take your time! Rushing production is for the office, detail and relaxation are part of the shop!
